Heat shrinkable breakouts are a type of heat shrink tubing product used to environmentally protect and insulate wiring connections or splices. Breakout provide a durable cover and seal around connections between multiple wires or where wires branch out (called a “Y” splice or “pigtail”). They help block moisture, chemicals, abrasion and other environmental factors.
Standard breakouts are made of polyolefin which shrinks 50% in diameter when heated. High-temperature and chemically-resistant options are also available using materials like fluoropolymer. Adhesive lined breakouts provide the strongest seal.
To apply, cut a section of breakout tubing to the required length to cover the connection. Make slits or holes in the side of the tubing to thread the wires through. Position the breakout so the connection is centered inside the tube.Apply heat using a standard heat gun until the breakout shrinks tightly around the wires. The shrinking process can take a few seconds to a couple minutes depending on the thickness and material. Heating while gently tugging on the tubing helps it form around the wires.
Let the breakout cool completely. Once shrunk and cooled, it will remain firmly wrapped around the electrical connection to insulate and protect it. Properly applied, it can withstand temperature extremes, moisture and other hazards for a long time. Breakouts are sized by the outer diameter of bundled wires. Common sizes are 1/4 inch up to 2 inches to suit most standard gauge wiring. Choose a size close to the connection outer diameter for the best seal and fit.
Heat Shrinkable Breakout provide quick, durable insulation for wiring connections in electrical work, machinery, vehicles, plumbing, appliances and other fields. They eliminate the need to wrap connections in cloth or vinyl tape. Additional protection can be achieved by wrapping the entire breakout in protective wrapping such as PVC tape or vinyl electrical tape and then marking or labeling as needed for identification.
