The Use of Cold Shrinkable Breakout

A cold shrinkable breakout (or cold shrink breakout) is a type of cable accessory that provides sealing and protection for cable junctions, branchings, or ends. The term "cold shrink" refers to the installation process, which does not require heating or tools - instead, the accessory is simply stretched and pulled over the cable.


A typical cold shrinkable breakout has a tubular shape and is made of a specialized elastomer, such as silicone rubber. The elastomer provides excellent insulation and sealing properties, as well as resistance to environmental factors such as water, humidity, UV radiation, and ozone.


The breakout is typically supplied in a pre-stretched state, ready for installation. When pulled over the cable joint or termination, it rapidly recoils and conforms to the shape of the cable. The end of the breakout is then secured with a clip or tie wrap.


Cold shrinkable breakouts are commonly used in low- and medium-voltage power cables in industrial, commercial, and utility applications. They are a convenient and cost-effective alternative to other types of cable accessories that require heat or special tools for installation. Additionally, because they require less preparation and do not involve open flames or hot surfaces, they are often safer to install and handle than traditional heat-shrink products.


Installing a cold shrinkable breakout is a relatively easy and straightforward process that does not require any special tools or equipment. Here are the basic steps:


Clean the cable Before installing the breakout, make sure the cable is clean and free of dust, grease, or other contaminants. Use a cleaning solution or a dry cloth to remove any residues from the surface.


Open the breakout Remove the breakout from its packaging and carefully unwind the closure core. This will create a gap between the two ends of the breakout, allowing it to be pulled over the cable.


Position the breakout Slide the breakout over the cable joint or termination and position it in the desired location. Make sure the breakout completely covers the cable insulation and extends a few centimeters beyond the joint or termination.


Release the closure core Pull the tear tab or other device that secures the closure core in place. This will release the compression force on the breakout, allowing it to shrink and conform to the cable shape.


Secure the breakout Wrap a clip or tie wrap around the end of the breakout to prevent it from slipping off. Make sure the clip is tight enough to keep the breakout in place but not so tight as to damage the insulation.


Inspect the installation After installing the breakout, visually inspect it to ensure it is properly positioned, secured, and adheres to the cable surface. Check for any gaps, cracks, or deformations that could compromise the insulation or sealing properties.
