What is the difference between cold shrink and heat shrink termination kit?

Cold shrink and heat shrink termination kits are both used in electrical applications to provide insulation and sealing for cable terminations. However, they differ significantly in their installation methods and properties.


Cold shrink termination kits consist of pre-expanded rubber or silicone sleeves that are placed over cable terminations. These sleeves are held in place by a removable plastic support core. As the core is removed, the sleeve contracts, providing a tight seal around the cable termination.

Heat Shrink: Heat shrink termination kits contain tubular sleeves made of polymeric materials such as cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) or polyolefin. These sleeves are heated using a heat gun or other heat source, causing them to shrink and form a tight seal around the cable termination.


Cold shrink termination kits are often considered easier and quicker to install compared to heat shrink kits. They require minimal tools and expertise, as the sleeve contracts simply by removing the support core.

Heat Shrink: Heat shrink termination kits may require more specialized tools and training for proper installation, as they involve heating the sleeve to induce shrinkage. Care must be taken to apply heat evenly and avoid overheating, which could damage the sleeve or the cable.


Cold shrink termination kits are unaffected by temperature variations during installation, making them suitable for use in both hot and cold environments. They also do not require an external heat source, reducing the risk of accidental burns or fire hazards.

Heat Shrink: Heat shrink termination kits are sensitive to ambient temperature and may require careful handling in extreme conditions. Additionally, the use of heat guns poses a potential safety risk if not used properly.


Cold shrink sleeves provide excellent sealing and insulation properties, forming a reliable barrier against moisture, contaminants, and electrical stress. The pre-expanded nature of the sleeve ensures consistent compression and sealing around the cable termination.

Heat Shrink: Heat shrink sleeves offer comparable sealing and insulation performance to cold shrink sleeves when properly installed. However, achieving uniform shrinkage and avoiding voids or gaps is essential to ensure optimal performance.

While both cold shrink and heat shrink termination kits serve the same purpose of providing insulation and sealing for cable terminations, they differ in installation method, complexity, environmental considerations, and sealing properties. The choice between the two depends on factors such as installation requirements, environmental conditions, and installer expertise.
